Susan M. (Minick) Perkins, PhD
Associate Professor
My research interests
are in the area of categorical data analysis.
Many biomedical studies involve outcomes which are qualitative in nature. In my dissertation, I discuss using models which are non-linear in the model parameters
to simultaneously model the univariate and bivariate marginal relationships in two-way
and multi-way contingency tables having ordinal classification levels. This type
of analysis is useful, for example, when studying rater agreement and social mobility
data. My collaborative interests include health services, quality of life, and epilepsy
research. I am currently collaborating on several projects with the Regenstrief
Institute. The intention of one study is to assess whether the use of computerized
reminders influences physician practices. The other involves determining whether
or not the availability of detailed reports on Emergency Room patient history lowers
ER costs and improves patient care. I am also the director of the Biostatistics Core for the IU Center for Enhancing Quality of Life in Chronic Illness. Finally,
I collaborate with the School of Nursing in conducting critical research in children
to understand the relationships between structural characteristics of the brain,
neuropsychological, and seizure characteristics and academic achievement and behavior
in children with epilepsy, and how child and family adaptation to the illness is
associated with these relationships.
